Introduction
On February 19, 2026, Govt. Girls College, Sonipat, hosted an insightful guest lecture titled "Japanese Language and Its Historical Evolution." The session was delivered by Mr. Jitender Mehta, President of Experience Japan, an organization dedicated to fostering Indo-Japanese cultural and educational ties.
The lecture aimed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the linguistic journey of the Japanese language, moving beyond basic communication to explore its deep-rooted historical transformations.

The Visionary Initiative
The session was conceptualized and initiated by Dr. Naveen Vashishta (Department of History). His forward-thinking approach to historical studies—bridging the gap between Indian heritage and international historical perspectives—was the driving force behind this event. Experience Japan extends its heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Vashishta for his vision, meticulous planning, and commitment to providing students with global exposure.
Key Highlights of the Lecture
Mr. Jitender Mehta took the audience through a chronological journey of the Japanese language, focusing on three pivotal stages of evolution:
The Chinese Influence: The speaker explained how Japan originally had no writing system and adopted Chinese characters (Kanji) around the 4th century. This integration laid the foundation for Japanese literature and administration.
The Birth of Hiragana and Katakana: The lecture detailed how Japan eventually simplified Kanji to create its own phonetic scripts, allowing for a more nuanced expression of native Japanese thought and aesthetics.
Modern Evolution and Western Impact: Mr. Mehta highlighted the significant influx of Western vocabulary following the Meiji Restoration and post-WWII era. He illustrated how modern Japanese seamlessly blends ancient tradition with contemporary global influences.
The session was attended by approximately 100 students and several faculty members, all of whom engaged in a vibrant Q&A session, reflecting a keen interest in international languages and history.
