Experience Japan announces that registrations are officially open for Japan On Canvas 2026, marking the 12th edition of the annual National Painting Competition for school students across India. In a significant milestone for bilateral cultural engagement, Experience Japan is celebrating Japan Month in close cooperation with the Embassy of Japan. Japan On Canvas 2026 is officially listed with the Embassy of Japan under the prestigious Japan Month Celebration framework.
First launched in 2013, Japan On Canvas has grown into a cornerstone of Experience Japan's cultural and educational initiatives. The competition provides a national platform for primary, middle, and high school students to explore Japanese history, heritage, art, lifestyles, and modern urban partnerships. By embedding creative art within educational research, the competition fosters cross-cultural understanding, critical thinking, and artistic expression among Indian youth. The institutional backing of the Embassy of Japan under Japan Month elevates the competition's national profile, providing participating students and educational institutions with diplomatic recognition.
Competition Structure, Categories, and Thematic Topics of Japan On Canvas
The competition is divided into three distinct academic categories to ensure age-appropriate thematic exploration and balanced evaluation. Each category challenges students to conduct background research before translating their conceptual understanding onto canvas.
Category 1: Grade 4 to Grade 6 Students
Assigned Topic: A Japanese Festival
Category 2: Grade 7 to Grade 9 Students
Assigned Topic: Two Cultures, One Heart: Similarities in Japanese and Indian Lifestyles
Category 3: Grade 10 to Grade 12 Students

National Exhibitions
The top 33 winning artworks—comprising the 3 Mega Winners and the 30 Category Winners—will be exhibited at galleries across India. In previous editions, winning entries were showcased at institutions such as the Japan Foundation Gallery in New Delhi, BITS Pilani, and the World University of Design.
The complete list of top 225 awardees, along with exhibition dates and gallery venues, will be officially announced in October 2026.
Awards for Art Educators and Participating Schools
Grand Art Teacher's Cash Prize (INR 5,000/-): Art teachers from participating institutions are invited to submit an original painting for the exhibition's dedicated Teacher's Wall. Submission is entirely free of charge. Artwork must be executed on canvas measuring 2 feet by 3 feet, utilizing any color medium, focused on the theme "Buddha in Peace/Meditation". One outstanding teacher entry will receive a cash prize of INR 5,000/-.
Star School Awards: 3 institutional awards will be presented to schools demonstrating outstanding contribution based on total participation volume and overall artistic quality.
Faculty Appreciation Certificates: Official Certificates of Appreciation will be issued to all participating Teacher In-charges and School Principals.

Technical Specifications and Judgement Criteria
To ensure standardization across national entries, participants and art teachers must strictly adhere to physical and administrative guidelines. Non-compliance with dimensional or certification requirements may lead to disqualification.
Technical Artwork Requirements
On-Campus Execution: All paintings must be completed within school premises under the direct supervision of school faculty.
Dimension Specifications: Paintings must measure exactly 12 inches by 18 inches.
Color Medium: Participants may use any color medium, including watercolors, acrylics, poster paints, or oil colors.
Paper Base: Artwork must be executed on thick paper or canvas to provide a sturdy base for handling and display.
Anonymity Rule: The front face of the painting must remain free of student names, signatures, school stamps, or identifying marks.
Identification Form (Annexure III): The back of each painting must carry the completed Annexure III form detailing: Competition Category, Title of Painting, Student's Name and Signature, Age, Class, School Name, Art Teacher's Name and Signature, and Principal's Name and Signature with official school stamp.
Transit Protection: Submissions must be dispatched in waterproof packaging to prevent damage during transit.
Ownership: Once submitted, physical artworks become part of the event archive and will not be returned under any circumstances.
Jury Evaluation Criteria
Submissions are evaluated by an expert jury panel across four key artistic dimensions:
Concept: Originality, depth of cultural research, and alignment with the assigned category topic.
Coloring: Application, color harmony, tonal balance, and technical proficiency.
Composition: Visual structure, framing, spatial organization, and perspective.
Overall Impact: Visual resonance, execution quality, and aesthetic appeal.

Schools must register online, complete physical artwork collection, and submit student data prior to the official deadline.
Participation Fee and Expense Retention
Total Participant Fee: INR 150 per student.
School Administrative Retention: Schools may retain INR 25 per student to cover local organizing and administrative expenses.
Net Fee Remittance: Schools remit INR 125 per student to Experience Japan.

Online School Registration: Register your institution at www.e-j.org.in/japanoncanvas immediately upon deciding to participate. Only basic school and coordinator contact details are required.
Student Briefing & Execution: Brief students on category themes, encourage research on Japanese culture, and conduct the painting session within school premises.
Certification & Labeling: Paste Annexure III on the back of each painting, ensuring complete details, teacher/principal signatures, and institutional stamps.
Fee Collection & Payment: Collect student fees, retain INR 25 per entry, and remit the remaining INR 125 per entry to Experience Japan via DD, NEFT, or UPI.
