I. Overview and Grand Inauguration Recap
The 11th Edition of "Japan On Canvas," Experience Japan's signature annual art event, achieved a spectacular milestone with the successful conclusion of its first exhibition phase at the Japan Foundation, New Delhi. This exhibition proudly showcased the Top 33 shortlisted artworks selected from the record-breaking 4879 entries received from 206 schools across India.

The exhibition was formally inaugurated on November 1, 2025, by our Chief Guests, Maj. Gen. Sh. Pramod Kumar Saighal and Mr. Koji Sato (Director General - Japan Foundation, New Delhi). Their presence set an inspiring tone, highlighting the importance of cultural diplomacy through youth engagement. The ceremony was also distinguished by the attendance of guests including Mrs. Saighal, Mr. Rajesh Sharma (Artist and JOC 2025 Jury), Mr. Prince Sharma (Canada Embassy), and Mr. Rakesh Sharma (CBSE Subject Expert- Mathematics).
II. Exceptional Public Engagement and Footfall
Over its duration, Exhibition I garnered overwhelming public interest, with hundreds of art enthusiasts, students, teachers, and parents visiting the gallery to appreciate the exceptional talent of India’s young artists. The gallery floor was consistently vibrant, serving as a dynamic forum for dialogue on Japanese aesthetics and artistic technique.
Learning Outcomes and Cultural Exchange
Visitors engaged deeply with the displayed pieces, which were themed around the unique elements of Japanese culture: Architecture, Art-forms, Mount Fuji, and Sakura. The exhibition facilitated significant cross-cultural learning, with attendees reporting:
Deeper Appreciation for Aesthetics: Visitors gained a clearer understanding of Japanese artistic principles, such as the tranquility and harmony found in the portrayal of Mount Fuji and the ephemeral beauty of Sakura (Cherry Blossoms).
Architectural Insight: Detailed renderings of traditional Japanese architecture encouraged viewers to explore themes of minimalism and integration with nature.
Inspiration: For many younger students, seeing the work of their peers at a national-level exhibition served as a powerful source of inspiration for future artistic pursuits.
III. Focus on Educational Outreach: Dedicated School Visits
A crucial aspect of this phase was the organized visits by school groups, which turned the exhibition into an active classroom for cultural studies.
K.R. Mangalam World School, New Delhi was among the first educational institutions to visit the exhibition on November 4, 2025, where students and teachers spent time analyzing the winning compositions and discussing the challenging task of interpreting complex cultural themes through paint.
The Ardee School brought their students. Their visit focused particularly on the diverse Japanese Art-forms depicted, leading to rich discussions among the students about different mediums and styles used by the participants.
On November 7, 2025, the exhibition hosted Lovely Public School, New Delhi. The students, accompanied by their faculty, celebrated the achievements of the finalists, underscoring the importance of perseverance and creativity in national competitions.
IV. Conclusion and Future Outlook
The successful conclusion of the 1st Exhibition of "Japan On Canvas 2025" at the Japan Foundation has set a new benchmark for the initiative. The outstanding level of participation and the positive engagement from the public and educational institutions reaffirm the event's vital role in promoting India-Japan friendship through the universal language of art.
Experience Japan extends heartfelt gratitude to the Japan Foundation for their generous support in hosting this inaugural exhibition and to all the participating schools, students, parents, and visitors who made this phase a phenomenal success.
We look forward to carrying this momentum forward as we prepare to take these shortlisted artworks to the next exhibition venue.
